At approximately 11:30 a.m. on December 15, 2021, a grass fire was reported approximately 20 miles west of Guymon, OK. This fire, at last report, had consumed some 400 acres of land, with more being threatened.
Out of an abundance of caution, the Texas County Emergency Manager has requested a partial evacuation of the Town of Guymon to prepare for the potential risk to the area. The following warning was transmitted:
“AN ONGOING WILDFIRE WEST OF GUYMON WILL THREATEN THE WEST EDGE OF THE TOWN OF GUYMON. RESIDENTS OF GUYMON WEST OF SUNSET LANE AND COUNTY ROAD 30 ARE REQUESTED TO EVACUATE TO THE NORTH OR SOUTH OF GUYMON TO AVOID THE PATH OF THE FIRE. OTHER RESIDENTS OF GUYMON ARE URGED TO BE ALERT FOR AND HEED EVACUATION INSTRUCTIONS ISSUED BY LAW ENFORCEMENT AND EMERGENCY RESPONDERS.”
Please take all precautions necessary to protect yourself. Winds in the area are in excess of 40 mph and can cause erratic fire behavior.
The Shawnee Tribe Office of Emergency Management (STOEM) is aware of at least two Shawnee Tribe employees in the area who have evacuated their homes. Tribal leadership will continue to monitor the situation and will offer assistance to those in need as the situation progresses.
